Ukulele Chuck Tutorial and Practice

Welcome! Today we will be doing two things: 1. learning how to chuck, and 2. practicing our chuck. If you already know how to chuck, move on to the second video below.

HOW TO CHUCK

Chucking or chunking is a percussive sound we produce on the ukulele. In order to get a nice chuck, we should stop the strings suddenly and also make a sound with our hand on the top of the ukulele. I have a ukulele chucking tutorial here.

VIDEO TUTORIAL: HOW TO CHUCK

Watch this tutorial to learn how to chuck. This tutorial was taken from the 30 Day Uke Challenge. This was a challenge made for beginners who want to learn how to play ukulele from scratch.

The best way to master the chuck is by watching this video once without the ukulele (just watch & listen) and the second time with you trying to follow along. Repeat step 2 one more time.

CHUCKING DRILLS/PRACTICE

The video below contains 4 different strumming patterns to help you practice the chuck.
  1. Down Chuck Down Chuck (DXDX)
  2. Down Up Chuck (DUX)
  3. Down Up Chuck Up (DUXU)
  4. Down Up Chuck Up  Up Chuck Up (DUXU UXU)

VIDEO PRACTICE: CHUCKING PATTERNS

If you are new to chucking, be patient with yourself. Know that this takes time to master, but once you have done it once, you'll be able to do it again.

My Patreon members have received a printable PDF that has these patterns notated. If you prefer to have a printable as well, join us on Patreon! www.patreon.com/bernadetteteachesmusic
